Don Brown
Notes from Don Brown:
“Born and raised on Long Island in New York.”
“Entered St. Lawrence University as an engineering student. After discovering a complete and utter lack of aptitude for calculus or physics, switched to history and eventually earned a B.A. degree.
“With baccalaureate in hand, found work as busboy. Waiting, cooking, and bar-tending jobs followed; eventually ended up working in saloon on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. One of the customers, a publishing art director, explained the world of freelance illustration. With no training, except years of obsessive doodling, became an illustrator. Spent several years drawing and painting for money.
“Married and became father to two girls. Introduced to children’s literature. Armed with nothing but the cockeyed notion that kids needed better biographical picture books, wrote and illustrated Ruth Law Thrills a Nation which was published by Ticknor & Fields in 1992. More than a dozen other picture books followed. Currently working on illustrated history books for Houghton Mifflin and Roaring Brook Press.
“Wishing to explore history beyond the restrictions of non-fiction, wrote the novels, The Notorious Izzy Fink and The Train Jumper (both Roaring Brook Press). Both take place in America at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, a particular interest. Presently, working on a 1920's novel.
“Has big, white mutt, named Woody. Loves pizza. As does Don.”
